My name is Sophie Rowcliffe, I’m 18 years old and I am currently a second year studying an Extended Diploma for Performing Arts Dance at Exeter College.

I have been a passionate dancer since a young age and I’m trained in many styles such as Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Contemporary and Freestyle. I am also a part of an award winning musical theatre company called Centre Stage based in Exmouth. I have been a part of many shows such as Carousel, Godspell, Crazy For You, Oliver!, Pirates of Penzance, Oklahoma! and more recently working towards West Side Story. I have also had the opportunity to tour with the company, Trio Entertainment over the Christmas in their production of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ as a dancer.

I’d like to go on to do performing arts at University to further my training to hopefully become a professional dancer in the future dancing in shows and then later advance into teaching.

I chose to do my work experience at Exim Dance Company as they offer a wide range of sessions for a range of individuals, as well as to see how a company is run day to day behind the dance sessions. I chose them because of the versatility of the company with the aspect of their touring production alongside their weekly sessions.

My first day I started by reading the companies policies on confidentiality, health and safety, complaints, data protection, equal opportunities and fundraising. I found this interesting as I had never given much thought into how a company is run.

The next day I went to St Matthew’s Primary School with Kaitlyn and Martha for two after school sessions where they were working on a dance phrase. It was interesting to watch them teach and how they kept the kids interested and focused as they had split the session into parts. At the end, they gave the children time to create and perform their own dances which they really enjoyed.

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to do work experience with Exim as I have experienced how a company is run and how they teach the different groups.
