Learning Disability Week
From 14th – 20th June it was Learning Disability Week, the week was promoted by Mencap on their website. We wanted to share the work we have been doing with Mencap over the past year.
Our practitioner Chloe has been delivering weekly virtual sessions – catch Chloe talking about the sessions on this podcast from 53:00 minutes:
With Flying Colours
We have been working on a number of commissions with ‘With Flying Colours’.
Firstly, Exim has been continuing their work with College Road Primary School, throughout the time Exim has been working in collaboration with poet and script writer Jaime Lock. During the course of the weekly sessions we have been working towards a performance which will be performed on the 19th July.
Secondly, Exim and Taiko Journey were 1 of 4 projects commissioned in Plymouth to deliver a series of taster workshops and performances. The team have delivered their inspiration days with two schools, they have then taken their input from those workshops and incorporated it into a workshop & performance to 8 schools around Plymouth.
Learning and Creating Programme
During June, Exim Dance Company were asked to be a part of a pilot project by University of Plymouth entitled ‘Learning and Creating Programme’ delivering dance and arts based sessions with young children and their families from Green Ark Children’s Centre.
Exim Dance practitioners Laura and Chloe had a wonderful time working alongside other artists; Stiltskin Theatre Company as well as Early Childhood Studies and Fine Art Students from Plymouth University. It was great to see how the young people interacted with each other, us and their families through the opportunity of play!
Exim runs 7 free sessions a week for young people & 4 classes a week for adults.
We’re so happy that out of the 11 sessions we can host 8 of them here at Oxford House Creative Hub.
Some of the groups have been taking initiative in sessions for their wellbeing and have been progressing with their dances each week.
Take a look at some of the photos we have captured…
We are sharing this petition against the proposed cut of the BA (Hons) Dance Course at the University of Plymouth. This course is very close to the hearts of many of the people who engage with Exim Dance Company.
The course has been known to set a precedent within Plymouth and the South West for inclusivity in dance, this has then been passed on to many graduates & has become an underlying ethos at Exim Dance Company – everyone and anyone is welcome to dance with Exim.
So please, if you can – sign the petition today to save the Dance Course at University of Plymouth!
We were really glad that we could offer Beth Tiner; a 3rd year student on the Dance Course at University of Plymouth a placement with Exim Dance Company for the week commencing 14th June. Beth shadowed on projects such as Communities Together, Making Waves, Open Company Class, ADAPT and Movement for All – Beth even got the chance to visit a few primary schools.
Here is what Beth had to say from her time with Exim:
“During my time at University I have been interested in making dance accessible for all, so I was thrilled to have my placement opportunity with Exim. Since starting my placement this week, I have had the opportunity to work with so many groups of people, and I am so glad to have had the experience to see first hand the impactful work Exim does.”
