Work Experience Students

Throughout July, the Exim team had not one, but TWO work experience students join us!

First up we were joined by Mia from Plympton Academy. We were then joined by Blake from Stoke Damerel Community College, who also engages with our Making Waves sessions!

Both students assisted with numerous educational sessions across the city as well as several of our community sessions including Movement For All and Communities Together North Prospect.

Mia stated on her visit: I have had such an amazing time here and everyone has been absolutely great! I will definitely be coming back here in the future to be a part of this great community of people.’

It is always a pleasure to provide these vital opportunities for young people across the city and we look forward to supporting more young people with their work experience in the future!

Commonwealth Baton Bearer Event

On Monday 4th July, Exim Dance partnered with The Barbican Theatre and were commissioned by Plymouth City Centre Company to create and deliver a really special performance for the ‘Queen’s Baton Relay’ in the build up to The Commonwealth Games!

We felt very proud to have been asked to be apart of such an epic event and to have led on the cultural community welcome in Plymouth

There was Taiko Drumming, Giant Puppet Performances and lots of Dancing, with even some of our young people joining us for the special event!

Thornbury Primary School

The following day, Laura and Chloe delivered three ‘Tea Dance’ inspired workshops to 75 students on Plymouth Hoe from Thornbury Primary School!

The students were so engaged and even created their own 50’s inspired group dances to show to one another. It was a wonderful and joyful environment!

“Thank you so much for all you did today – we were all so impressed with how well you organised the sessions and how much the children enjoyed it – they were buzzing about it. I can truly say it was exactly what I wanted”.                                            Caroline – Teacher at Thornbury Primary School.

From one school to another for summer activities…

St Mary’s C of E Infant School

The very next day, Lydia and Chloe delivered four dance workshops to 90 students from Reception to Year 2 at St Mary’s C of E Infant School. The dance workshops were inspired by the Disney film – Encanto!

The students were fully involved and created their own group dance to show back to one another!

We are very much looking forward to returning to the school in September for our weekly after-school club!

With Flying Colours

Kaitlyn and Charlie have had a wonderful year-long project delivering in College Road Primary School as part of the With Flying Colours project. This month they performed not once, but three times; TWICE as the final part of the programme.

Our wonderful year 6 students titled their performance Inside The Box as a representation of their theatre in the round-inspired setup and we love this name too! They debuted the name during their second performance which was to the whole school and the group performed to family and friends on 21st July!

They all worked together developing their skills and performing amazingly, and it has been a pleasure to work with College Road Primary School again this academic year!

Final Community & Education Sessions

As we approach August, we wrapped up both our young people and adult weekly community sessions, as well as all educational sessions. We just want to take the time to say thank you to each person who has engaged with Exim Dance this academic year – it has been a pleasure to work with you all!

From September 2021 to July 2022, Exim Dance Company engaged 3,818 people across 11 schools and also delivered 12 external school workshops to 755 people!

We look forward to seeing you all in September!

In the meantime, why not check out our NEW Primary Dance promo by Dajain Daley HERE.

Suzanne Sparrow Workshop

Laura and Chloe delivered their FIRST Suzanne Sparrow Plymouth Language School workshop since 2019 due to COVID. They were joined by 20 students from France and Laura and Chloe were completely blown away by the engagement, energy and commitment of the group!

We even had time to do a dance battle with one another! Numerous students also engaged in a number of community sessions with ourselves and Rhythm City Dance Studio following the workshop!

We look forward to more workshops!

Fit and Fed Programme

On 25th July, we kickstarted our Fit and Fed Programme where we are delivering SEVEN programmes for ages 5 to 16 years throughout the summer holidays.

Our Fit and Fed Programme is filled with dancing, arts and crafts, multi-skills sessions from Plymouth Argyle Community Trust, Flax Workshops from Vicky Putler and even some Taiko Drumming!

Over the 7 programmes, we will be providing 8 of our young people the opportunity to gain work experience, assisting and helping the team deliver the weekly programmes to nearly 100 young people that have booked on!

Read a snippet from one of the young people who helped the first week from 25th – 29th July:
“I have had A LOT of fun working and volunteering for Exim… It has been fun making friends with the students and learning all about the young people!… If I had to relive one week of my life, it would always be this one!”

Keep your eyes peeled for more photos throughout the Programme!
