August Newsletter 2021

Fit and Fed

We started the month with our Fit and Fed program, which consisted of three separate weeks of activities for young people. We ran two weeks for 5 – 10 years and a week for 11-16 years (up to 25 with disabilities).

During the course of the 3 weeks we welcomed 72 young people to a week full of activities ranging from singing, dancing, wellbeing activities and arts & crafts.

We thoroughly enjoyed hosting three weeks full of activities for new and existing young people in the Plymouth area, it has been a great way to connect with families in the wider community.

Thank you to Plymouth City Council and Department for Education for funding this project.

Thank you to Brett Lockwood for the wonderful images taken throughout the program.

Young Person Volunteer

We want to say a big thank you to Carmen for volunteering her time to assist during the 5-10 year old Fit and Fed week. We love getting the young people who attend our 11-16 year old weekly services involved with as many opportunities as possible!

Here’s what Carmen had to say about the week:

‘I really enjoyed taking on more responsibility with exim by helping out with the primary sessions. I was able to help the children join in with the activities and  it really boosted my confidence.’

Wellbeing/Chill out room

Some of the finishing touches were completed at Oxford House Creative Hub, we now have a newly decorated wellbeing/chill out room for young people and adults to use at their convenience during their time at Oxford House Creative Hub. This is additionally being used for our wellbeing services including our Social Hour sessions and for external organisations to hire alongside or as well as our other studio spaces. If you’re interested in receiving a brochure contact –

We’re so thrilled with the outcome and can’t wait to use this space more for our own team meetings!

Change Makers

Our young people services are led and directed by our community participants, this process is directed through our very own Change Makers group. We value and respect the young people that attend our services and want to ensure that they are being listened to. Change Makers aims to meet once every 2-3 months to evaluate and reflect on the programs delivered at Exim Dance Company.

Furthermore, our last meeting left Kaitlyn & Hayley inspired and motivated to give feedback to the rest of the team on all of the great suggestions the young people came up with. Thank you to our dedicated team

Life Works Workshop

We were commissioned by Dance in Devon to deliver two separate workshops at Torre Abbey in Torquay for Lifeworks. It was great fun to deliver a dance workshop outside in the sunshine and can’t wait to be back again, thank you for having us.

Thank you to Dance in Devon and Lifeworks.

West End Carnival Parade

Hayley and Chloe led a workshop in preparation for the West End Parade on Saturday 28th August whereby Hayley and Beth would be leading the movement for the parade!

We were thrilled to lead the movement as part of the West End Carnival Parade, it was brilliant to see so much energy and colour in the community, we are so proud to be part of this community. Thank you to all those that turned up!

Thank you to Plymouth Dance for coordinating the event and Friends and Families of Special Children for attending the workshop.

Petrol Headz

One of Exim Dance Company’s community projects ‘Making Waves’ had the opportunity to work towards an event called Petrol Headz organised by Barbican Theatre.

They spent the week of 23rd August performing pop up performances and finished the week by headlining West End Carnival on the 28th August. Well done to all the young people who took part and all the other organisations across the city.

Action for Children

Chloe and Hayley had a brilliant afternoon facilitating a sea themed dance workshop for Green Ark Children’s Centre in partnership with Action for Children. We look forward to delivering more in the future.

We want to take the opportunity to reflect on this month and dedicate our sincerest condolences to those affected earlier this month in Keyham.

It has been a difficult time for the city of Plymouth. We will continue to speak openly and honestly about mental health and wellbeing in all aspects of our services.
