Amy Shaw – Space Scheme

Exim Dance Company are proud to offer an artist space scheme at our premises Oxford House Creative Hub.

This scheme offers free studio space for the duration of one year, to support local artists that may be looking to develop a new piece/pieces of work, undergo a research and development period or even explore new practices that could help progress their career. It’s important to us that we are offering opportunities to help support career development and profile the great versatility and creativity of arts and culture in our community.

To find out more about Space Scheme and the artists selected, visit our Space Scheme page on the website.

Catch up with one of the artists selected!

My name is Amy Shaw and I am a theatre director based in Plymouth. It sounds obvious but in order to rehearse plays you need space to do it in. And this costs money which someone starting out or creating new work without funding etc doesn’t have. This is why I applied for the space scheme and why I was so delighted to be selected. It is a huge gift to be able to rehearse and create without financial worry. That support gives the freedom to play, to create, to risk things and to try things out and to create a community of theatre makers.

So, what have I been using the space for?  Shortly after being accepted onto the space scheme, I was also accepted to bring my two-actor adaptation of Romeo and Juliet to Exeter Fringe. The last few weeks have been filled with rehearsals with Danny Laine and Connor Reed (Romeo and Juliet respectively). Ours is a non-traditional version using the original text. It focuses on Romeo and Juliet’s teenage emotions, feelings of isolation and alienation, and their willingness to go to extreme lengths to stay with the only person who seems a solid part of their reality. If you would like to come and see it, the details on how to get tickets are below.

Once this production is done, I will be back in the space working on some new ideas, some using existing texts and others being devised from scratch. I fully intend to squeeze every drop out of this opportunity.
